Saturday Painting Palooza Vol. 400

Hello again painting fans.

This week I will be continuing with the painting of the 1949 Packard. I'm using my usual acrylic paints on a large 20x20 inch gallery-wrapped canvas. The photo that I am using is seen directly below.

When last seen, the painting appeared as it does in the photo directly below.

Since that time, I have continued to work on the painting.

The changes for this week are many. I've finally addressed the righthand headlight. It is complete and done in grays and white. The surrounding chrome ring is handled in a fashion similar to the other chrome elements, white with blue shading. I've modified the lefthand light slightly to match its brother. Below, the upper surface of the bumper has had details added to the far side. On the bottom right side, I have added the bolt head seen as an oval. I've also added more blue to the shading of the car body. Seen in person, it appears more intense. Finally, I've gone over the gray of the pavement. And with these changes, the painting is done.

The current and final state of the painting is seen in the photo directly below.

I'll have a new painting to show you next week. See you then.

Saturday Painting Palooza Vol.399

Hello again painting fans.

This week I will be continuing with the painting of the 1949 Packard. I'm using my usual acrylic paints on a large 20x20 inch gallery-wrapped canvas. The photo that I am using is seen directly below.

When last seen, the painting appeared as it does in the photo directly below.

Since that time, I have continued to work on the painting.

There are many changes this week. First, I've completed the headlight to the rear. You can get a sense of how things will look when the remaining light is done. To the bottom, I've added a shadow below the car. Previously, the Packard looked like it was floating in space. Now it is well grounded, so to speak. I've lightened the color of the bumper face to bring it in line with the other chrome elements. Finally, the highlights of the car now appear in blue instead of the prior white. I think that it brings a unity and/or consistency to the various elements.

The current state of the painting is seen in the photo directly below.

I'll have more progress to show you next week. See you then.

I've been busy. First of all, I have straightened the righthand bumperguard. It was rather obviously out of line but now stands proudly erect. Moving to the left, the bumper face has been painted to match the earlier section. Moving further, the lefthand bumperguard has now been fully painted. Note that it mirrors the grille above as does the one to the right side. After that, I continued to paint the far end of the bumper. With that completed, there are only minor details on the grille and bumper. to be completed. It is now finally time to move to the headlights above, but that will be for next week.

The current state of the painting is seen in the photo directly below.

I'll have more progress to show you next week. See you then.

There are lots of changes this week. First of all, I've finally addressed something that was bothering me for some time. The bend of the hood down to the grille was far too straight. I've changed it into a gentle curve more like that of the photo. Next, I began my trek downward toward the roadway. I've completed the leading edges of the 3 horizontal grille bars. Note the small shadow behind the bumper guard. Below the lowest grille bar, I've added a line of black paint. I will likely need to widen that line to show heavy shadow behind the bumper. Out front, the righthand bumper guard has received the crazy mass of lines and shadow simulating the reflection of surrounding elements. This took quite some time to paint and it's still not quite right. Finally, the bumper itself has received some paint on its right side. It will need much more work.

Looking at the progress so far, I see that the bumper guard will need straightening. Also in need is the far headlight which will need to be lifted and resized.

The current state of the painting is seen in the photo directly below.

I'll have more progress to show you next week. See you then.

When last seen, the painting appeared as it does in the photo directly below.

I have continued to work my way downward. But first I took a little detour straightening the middle grille bar. After that I added white to the two lower bars. Each has the blue shading at the leading edge. Between the bars, blue paint has been added. The blue continues above the bumper. Note that the bumper has received some white paint on its right upper edge. There is much left to do. I'm hoping to have this one ready for the April show.

Hello again painting fans.

This week I will be continuing with painting the painting of the 1949 Packard. I'm using my usual acrylic paints on a large 20x20 inch gallery-wrapped canvas. The photo that I am using is seen directly below.

When last seen, the painting appeared as it does in the photo directly below.

Since that time, I have continued to work on the painting.

I've finally begun to paint all that chrome. For this week's cycle I've concentrated on the central grille and upper surface of the highest of the 3-level section. I have attempted to follow the photo closely. Even so, I feel that the 3-level section needs further revision. It does not seem to follow the photo closely enough in the details below the central grille and under the righthand headlight. As to the central grille, note that the shadowed areas inside have been painted as well as the highlights on the outer section. The horizontal sections also have thin highlighted sections. I'm happy with it for the most part. Finally, note the signal light to the far right, inside the grille. I'll have much more next week.

The current state of the painting is seen in the photo directly below.

I'll have more progress to show you next week. See you then.

I found that I had to do some further revision of the grille and bumper. Note that the upper right corner of the central grille has been reshaped and the grille bars have been curved a bit. The result is now more faithful to the photo. Below, the bumper guards have been reshaped and reduced in size. I've also cleaned the edges of the headlights a bit. Finally, and most notably, the body paint has received some paint intended to simulate a reflection. I've used this technique several times before. A loose layer of watery whitish paint has been applied with one of my older loose brushes. I've applied it in a way that vaguely resembles the photo. I think that it works fairly well.

The current state of the painting is seen in the photo directly below.

You'll have to look a bit carefully to see this week's changes, but they are there. I've continued to refine the image in preparation for the reflections and other details to come. The long horizontal grille bars are mostly done with only some minor refinements needed to the far side of the car. Above, the central grille is finished except for a few spots that will need a light overpaint for uniformity purposes. To each side, the headlights have received some paint but will need further work. Finally, I've painted over the orange lines above the central grille.

The current state of the painting is seen in the photo directly below.

It has been a very busy week, part of which had me playing the role of single parent for my challenging young teenager. Nevertheless, I was able to get some work done on the painting. I had hoped to finish the base layer of the chrome but did manage to get most of it done. Seen in a light blue, some further refinement is required before the highlights and reflections can be applied. Also, some elements are out of proportion including the bumper guards out front. I've added some black to the negative areas of the grill. Finally, the roadway has been given some gray paint as an initial layer.

The current state of the painting is seen in the photo directly below.

I'll have more progress to show you next week. See you then.

When last seen, the painting appeared as it does in the photo directly below.

I have cleaned up things and moved a couple of lines. The bumper needed to be adjusted and the base of the grille moved upward just a bit. With those things done I began to fill in the large spaces and define the various elements. As usual, this is just the first layer of paint. I was interested in definition and covering the white. You can now see where I'm going with things a bit more clearly. I'll continue to refine things for next week.

Saturday Painting Palooza Vol.390

Hello again painting fans.

This week I will be starting an entirely new painting. The photo that I will be using is seen directly below.

The photo depicts a section of a 1949 Packard, a subject that I have covered once previously. That painting from several years ago concentrated on the central grille. This painting will pull back a bit and encompass the entire front end. That earlier piece was done on a conventional 8x10 canvas. That proved to be a mistake as a there really was no suitable frame. A poorly matched oak frame likely kept it out of a juried art show into which it had been submitted. Frankly, even I recognized that it just looked terrible. I'm avoiding that mistake this time. This will be on a large (for me) 20x20 gallery-wrapped canvas. No frame needed. This canvas will stand on its own. I'm hoping that this will be accepted for one of the summer's juried art shows.

I had some trouble getting the preliminary lines on this large canvas. It was much larger than the canvases I usually use, typically an 8x8. Locating elements become a problem. Finally, I had the idea of adding a graph over the photo. I made a similar graph on the canvas. With these lines in place, I was able to accurately place the elements of the Packard. My efforts are seen below. Note the graph lines in pencil. Next week I will start filling things in.

The current state of the painting is seen in the photo directly below.

I'll have a new painting to show you next week. See you then.

Saturday Painting Palooza Vol.180 Celebration Edition

Welcome back.

This week we'll be continuing with the painting of the grille of a 1949 Packard automobile. The photo that I'm using is seen in the photo directly below. I'll be using my usual acrylics on an 8x10 canvas.

Seen in a vintage illustration directly below is the entire vehicle showing the grille in context.

When last seen, the painting appeared as it does in the photo directly below.

Since that time I have continued to work on the painting.

I've actually tweaked a number of items. The house reflections between the healight and central grille have been faded slightly with a thin wash of white paint. On the central grille itself, I've whitened the sky reflection and its included cloud. The sky was just a bit too blue as it was previously. Finally, the Packard badge has additional shadows and highlights along with changes to some of its details.

Receiving attention, at long last, is the upper lefthand corner. It now depicts a simple distant background, a welcome visual respite to the densely painted car body.

This piece has been the most challenging painting that I've ever attempted. I am pleased with the result. I feel that I've now turned something of a corner in my work.

The current and final state of the painting is seen in the photo directly below.

That's about it for now. Next week I'll have a new piece to show you. See you then.

As always, feel free to add photos of your own work in the comments section below.

I have continued to concentrate my efforts on the area between the central grille and the headlight. These reflections are now complete with the addition of the various details. The reflected houses now have all of their details including doors, windows and trim. Landscaping is added where bits of it are seen in the source photo.

I'm now finally ready to address the top left corner of the canvas, the only remaining area to be painted. I'll hopefully have it completed for you next week.
