Saturday Painting Palooza Vol.203

Hello again painting fans.

This week we'll be continuing with our 2 new paintings.

The photos that I will be using are seen directly below. The first photo shows the Monument Rocks in Kansas. Seen below that photo is one depicting a decrepit 1950 Hudson.

I'll be using my usual acrylics on 8x10 canvases.

For this week's installment, I've concentrated my efforts on the old Hudson.

When last seen, it appeared as it does in the photo directly below.

I've tried to capture the proportions of the Hudson. In doing so, I've used a number of different colors for purposes of clarity. Being partially color blind sometimes requires extra evarious elements.

I've gotten it to the point where things look almost right. Next I'll start to layer in the colors.

The foreground color is only the first layer of several to come. There will be more in future weeks as I build the layers of the pavement.
The current state of the painting is seen in the photos directly below.

That's about it for now. Next week I'll have more progress to show you. See you then. As always, feel free to add photos of your own work in the comments section below.

Saturday Painting Palooza Vol.202 Double Vision

Hello again painting fans.

This week we'll be starting an entirely new painting. Or two. This cycle will include a pair of new paintings. I don't know if time will allow for weekly updates of both but if not, I will show changes at least every other week.

The photos that I will be using are seen directly below. The first photo shows the Monument Rocks in Kansas. Seen below that photo is one depicting a decrepit 1950 Hudson.

I'll be using my usual acrylics on 8x10 canvases.

I was struck by the Kansas scene upon seeing this photo. I hadn't realized that such striking rocks existed outside of areas like the southwest. I've been looking forward to painting this scene for some time.

I came upon this poor Hudson one day and have also saved this one for a time. The surface of this car is just dripping with interesting details including the shadows cast by those door handles. And look at the shape of that back window. This will be very interesting.

In both cases the initial strokes have been laid down, placing the major elements in their proper places.

The current state of the paintings are seen in the photos directly below.

That's about it for now. Next week I'll have more progress to show you. See you then. As always, feel free to add photos of your own work in the comments section below.

Saturday Painting Palooza Vol.201

Hello again painting fans.

This week's 200th installment will continue the painting of the 1949 Hudson. The photo that I'm using is seen directly below.

I'll be using my usual acrylics on an 8x10 canvas.

Seen in a period advertisement directly below is a similar Hudson.

When last seen, the painting appeared as it does in the photo directly below.

Since that time I have continued to work on the painting.

I've continued to refine the background. The truck to the right and the boat to the left are now slightly darker than the wall behind them. This better differentiates these elements and pushes them forward a bit.

The Hudson has received considerable attention. The chrome has been given some of the the mottling seen in the photo. Highlights appear in white with blues providing shading and contrast. The headlights have been painted into their sockets. In this one respect I have diverged from the photo. I decided that the vacant sockets would have been a distraction. The windshield frame and steering wheel now peer from the shadows. Finally, the vintage Utah license plate has been painted below the grille.

The painting is now complete and appears in the photo directly below.

That's about it for now. Next week I'll have a new piece to show you. See you then. As always, feel free to add photos of your own work in the comments section below.

Saturday Painting Palooza Vol.200 Blogiversary

Hello again painting fans.

This week's 200th installment will continue the painting of the 1949 Hudson. The photo that I'm using is seen directly below.

I'll be using my usual acrylics on an 8x10 canvas.

Seen in a period advertisement directly below is a similar Hudson.

When last seen, the painting appeared as it does in the photo directly below.

Since that time I have continued to work on the painting.

This week I've concentrated all of my efforts on the background. The truck (or trailer) to the right is now well-defined with heavy shadow beneath it. Its wheels are now indicated only by the edge of its rims.

To the left of the Hudson, the boat has received similar attention. Along its side is the small oval window seen in the photo.

Finally, the pavement beneath the Hudson now has a directional, textured appearance.

Note that my poor photography has dulled the overall colors a bit. I only noticed this when posting my photos to photobucket alongside the earlier photos in this series.

That's about it for now. Next week I'll have more progress to show you. See you then. As always, feel free to add photos of your own work in the comments section below.
