From Utah With Dust

Here, at long last, is the Mormon Mazda, a 2002 Mazda Millenia that we purchased from a dealer in Utah. It took a mere 3-4 weeks for the commercial transporter to get it from there to here (NY). Apparently, you can get there from here, just not very quickly.

MM's journey took it to Las Vegas, California, Texas, Virginia and New Jersey. Then finally to NY. Suffice it to say that MM is better traveled than many human individuals.

Now out of production for 7 years, this is the 4th such Millenia to grace our driveway. In replacing our current ailing 2002 Millenia, we decided that a low mileage, western, salt-free car was the way to go, as this will likely be the last one we'll own. We had it checked out prior to our purchase. At 52,000 miles it will hopefully give us many years of good servivce.

Oh, there really is some of that red Utah dust in the console storage compartment.

Saturday Painting Palooza Vol.199 Quantum Leap Edition

Hello again painting fans.

This week we'll be continuing with the painting of the 1949 Hudson.  The photo that I'm using is seen directly below.

I'll be using my usual acrylics on an 8x10 canvas.

Seen in a period advertisement directly below is a similar Hudson.

When last seen, the painting appeared as it does in the photo directly below.

Since that time I have continued to work on the painting.

There comes a point in the evolution of a painting where things finally start to come together. After dragging along for several weeks, this one has now finally reached that important point. After darkening the background with another layer of paint, the effect that I was hoping to achieve finally seems to be happening. The lit front end of the car stands prominently against all of the other shadowed elements to the rear.

That front end now includes the old blue paint and surface rust as seen in the painting. I've continued to refine the grille, which will see more work in the next few weeks. The chrome is now a bit better defined. Here too, more definition will be coming soon.

The current state of the painting is seen in the photo directly below.

That's about it for now. Next week I'll have more progress to show you. See you then. As always, feel free to add photos of your own work in the comments section below.

Saturday Painting Palooza Vol.198

Hello again painting fans.

This week we'll be continuing with the painting of the 1949 Hudson.  The photo that I'm using is seen directly below.

I'll be using my usual acrylics on an 8x10 canvas.

Seen in a period advertisement directly below is a similar Hudson.

When last seen, the painting appeared as it does in the photo directly below.

Since that time I have continued to work on the painting.

I've been working on that rust color on the front end of the Hudson. It is a now seen in a more subdued shade achieved by adding a watery layer of brown and overlaying that with some watery white. It is now ready for the details seen in the photo.

I've also straightened out the lower grille. The full width chrome strip below the grille was rather uneven, even more so than the one seen in the photo. Below this strip, the two turn signals make their first appearance on either end. Above the grille, the famous Hudson badge also makes its first appearance.

Finally, the blue of the hood has received another layer and the panel gaps have been darkened.

The current state of the painting is seen in the photo directly below.

That's about it for now. Next week I'll have more progress to show you. See you then. As always, feel free to add photos of your own work in the comments section below.

Saturday Painting Palooza Vol.197

Hello again painting fans.

This week we'll be continuing with the painting of the 1949 Hudson. The photo that I'm using is seen directly below.

I'll be using my usual acrylics on an 8x10 canvas.

Seen in a period advertisement directly below is a similar Hudson.

When last seen, the painting appeared as it does in the photo directly below.

Since that time I have continued to work on the painting.

I've now painted in the rear and side windows of the Hudson, all viewed through the previously opaque windshield. I've used a shade of blue that gives the appearance of
shadow. It lends a further sense of depth to the painting.

I've also added the next layer of paint to the hood, now seen in an orange shade. I may have to adjust that color a bit. This layer was composed of a mix of red and ochre. I had hoped for more brown to it but maybe this will work anyway. I'll let you know in the next installment.

The current state of the painting is seen in the photo directly below.

That's about it for now. Next week I'll have more progress to show you. See you then. As always, feel free to add photos of your own work in the comments section below.

Saturday Painting Palooza Vol.196

Hello again painting fans.

This week we'll be continuing with the painting of the 1949 Hudson. The photo that I'm using is seen directly below.

I'll be using my usual acrylics on an 8x10 canvas.

Seen in a period advertisement directly below is a similar Hudson.

When last seen, the painting appeared as it does in the photo directly below.

Since that time I have continued to work on the painting.

I've continued to refine the Hudson. The hood of the car has received another coat of ochre, which now extends below the grille. The color now completely surrounds the grille, better setting it off and defining it.

Below the grille, those bumper guards have now been reduced a bit in size. They now better reflect proportions seen in the source photo. Finally, the headlights have been reshaped a bit and reduced in size. They too now have more realistic proportions.

The current state of the painting is seen in the photo directly below.

That's about it for now. Next week I'll have more progress to show you. See you then. As always, feel free to add photos of your own work in the comments section below.

Saturday Painting Palooza Vol.195

Hello again painting fans.

This week we'll be continuing with the painting of the 1949 Hudson. The photo that I'm using is seen directly below.

I'll be using my usual acrylics on an 8x10 canvas.

Seen in a period advertisement directly below is a similar Hudson.

When last seen, the painting appeared as it does in the photo directly below.

Since that time I have continued to work on the painting.

I've continued to refine the Hudson. I've reshaped the right side of the windshield slightly. It was drooping a bit to much to its right side. The grille has been cleaned up a bit. It still needs some work but now the areas of chrome and shadow are clear. I've continued down to the bumper, now are clearer. The bumper guard still need a serious reduction in size but that will come.

A further layer of paint has been added to the ochre and shadowed areas of the Hudson. I've also added another layer to the background and driveway. There will be more layers to come.

The current state of the painting is seen in the photo directly below.

That's about it for now. Next week I'll have more progress to show you. See you then. As always, feel free to add photos of your own work in the comments section below.
