Saturday Painting Palooza Vol.381

Hello again painting fans.

This week I will be continuing with the the painting of the vintage Hudson photograph. I'll be using my usual acrylic paints on an 8x10 gallery wrapped canvas. The photo appears directly below.

When last seen, that painting appeared as it does in the photo directly below.

Since that time I have continued to work on the painting.

I have concentrated my efforts directly on the Hudson. I spent some time addressing the front tire/wheel. It has been thoroughly revised. The tire, now fairly round and with reasonable proportions, houses a highlighted and shadowed wheelcover. While the band of the whitewall resides a bit too close to the wheelcover, it was well enough painted that I did not want to reverse course to correct the spacing. It will just have to remain a bit less than perfect.

The chrome molding along the doors and the base has been highlighted and shadowed. It gives the car a nice sweep of length. (The figure provides an interesting and contrasting vertical.) Notice that the figure casts her shadow on the black paint and chrome. Underneath the Hudson, the car now casts a shadow that continues within the front wheelwell. Looking within the Hudson's windows, the far side of the interior is seen in blue. Finally, the figure has received some flesh-colored paint.

The current state of the painting is seen in the photo directly below.

I'll have more progress to show you next week. See you then.

Saturday Painting Palooza Vol.380

Hello again painting fans.

This week I will be continuing with the the painting of the vintage Hudson photograph. I'll be using my usual acrylic paints on an 8x10 gallery wrapped canvas. The photo appears directly below.

When last seen, that painting appeared as it does in the photo directly below.

Since that time I have continued to work on the painting.

I've continued to work on the body of the Hudson. After adding a layer of paint to the windows, I added the highlights on the black paint. Note that the inset body lenght crease along the sides is now defined by surrounding highlights. It is an important detail that I was worried about. Note also how the figure casts a shadow on the car. I've also addressed the tires, or at least I started to. The rear tire was difficult to place and size appropriately. I believe that I arrived at the right size and placement. In front, the tire will need much more work. That will hopefully been seen next week.

Saturday Painting Palooza Vol.379

Hello again painting fans.

This week I will be continuing with the the paining of the vintage Hudson photograph. I'll be using my usual acrylic paints on an 8x10 gallery wrapped canvas. The photo appears directly below.

When last seen, that painting appeared as it does in the photo directly below.

Sinc that time I have continued to work on the painting.

This painting has actually gone through many, many changes since it was last seen here. I started by cleaning up the sky and background. I then moved on to the Hudson and figure. I needed to start making decisions about the colors that would help define those main elements. I painted the dress yellow and the Hudson blue. Subsequently, I realized that the car's chrome elements would require blue for at least part of those components. I changed the car body to brown but was not happy with the color. I then painted it black. Black looked better and will provide a better base for the highlights to come. I've also painted part of the background and woman's hair.

The current state of the painting is seen in the photo directly below.

I'll have more progress to show you next week. See you then.

Hello again painting fans.

This week I will be starting an entirely new painting but first a final update of the painting of Bell Rock in Sedona, Arizona. When last seen, that painting appeared as it does in the photo directly below.

It was suggested by DavidW that the shadows could use some revision. I then realized that the shadows of bell rock itself were inconsistent with the shadows of the plants on the path. Both the path and Bell Rock are composed of the same material and it seemed that shadows should appear the same. I revised Bell Rock to have the same color shadows of the path. The result, seen below, is not only a more consistent painting but one with greater impact. Thanks to DavidW.

Now on to the new painting. Long time readers will remember my fetish with old Hudsons. Specifically, those of vintage years 1948 through 1954, the so-called stepdown models. I've been saving the old photo seen directly below for some time. It was found on ebay. It is an appealing vintage image of a stylish woman standing in front of what is most likely a 1949-1950 model Hudson. I will now attempt to paint this image making up the colors as I go along. Good entertainment for a partly color blind individual.

I began with a pencil sketch on a gallery wrapped 8X10 canvas. It turned out fairly well. Note that it was painted on a canvas used previously but abandoned mid way. It will serve well here.

The current state of the painting is seen in the photo directly below.

I'll have more progress to show you next week. See you then.

Saturday Painting Palooza Vol.377

Hello again painting fans.

This week I will be continuing with the painting of Bell Rock in Sedona, Arizona. The photo that I'm using is seen directly below.

I'm using my usual acrylic paints on a 9x12 inch gallery-wrapped (frameless) canvas..

When last seen, the painting appeared as it does in the photo directly below.

Since that time I have continued to work on the painting.

For this week's cycle, I've moved to the left side of the path. Well, actually, I did some rearranging on the right. With some reshaping and enhancing of details and highlights, the junipers are now a bit less arranged looking. I'm happier with the result. To the left of the path, I've painted the flora/fauna with shadows going across the newly highlighted path. I've kept the colors consistent and details limited. To the far rear, a tall juniper makes its first appearance.

The current state of the painting is seen in the photo directly below.

With these changes, the painting is now done. I'll have a new one to show you next week. See you then.
