Saturday Painting Palooza Vol.385

Hello again painting fans.

This week I will be continuing with the painting of the 2 Cape May, New Jersey houses. I am using my usual acrylic paints on an 8x8 inch gallery-wrapped canvas. The photo that I'm using appears directly below.

When last seen, the photo appeared as it does in the photo directly below.

Since that time, I have continued to work on the painting.

It was a tough week for painting but I did manage a few updates. I covered the remaining white unpainted areas of the canvas. The areas at the base of the homes are now fortified with the brown seen in other parts of the painting. The windows have a thin layer of paint in preparation of things to come. I added the blue green color to the trim of the house on the right. For purposes of consistency, I've carried this color to the house on the left and to the structure on the far left side. Note the the trim will be reshaped as I paint the body color.

The current state of the painting is seen in the photo directly below.

I'll have more progress to show you next week. See you then.

I've continued to delineate and refine the 2 houses. To help clarify things, I've painted the various roofs in the same brown as the outline. The bodies of the 2 houses now appear in yellow. Note that many details are now present including the windows of the right side house. To the far right, the structure in the distance, or at least a fraction of it, now appears. The sky meets it from above. Finally, the roadway gets its first layer of paint.

The current state of the painting is seen in the photo directly below.

Saturday Painting Palooza Vol.383

Hello again painting fans.

This week I will be starting an entirely new painting. I'll be using my usual acrylic paints on an 8x8 gallery wrapped canvas. The photo that I will be using appears directly below.

I took this photo in October while in Cape May, New Jersey. When I first got a glimpse of these 2 structures, they read as one single large home. In fact they were built so close together that the space between them can only be seen when one is directly in front. One could literally shake hands with the neighbor next door from one's window. Their styles are close enough that the differences could not be detected from a distance. I was quite surprised Upon realizing that they were two separate units.

I had originally planned upon painting only the house to the left but ultimately decided to paint the two homes. The pair is far more interesting than each separately. They were obviously the product of the same builder. To me, the house on the left remains the more interesting of the two, and the one less changed over time. Looking at that structure, one can see that the Victorians attempted to construct in wood something approaching what the builders of French chateaux had built in stone centuries earlier. Tall and narrow with a steeply pitched roof, it was quickly-constructed gradeur for a growing 19th century middle class.

I began with an outline of the scene. Notice the reference marks at the edge of the canvas. These help me to keep things in proper proportion. I then painted in the sky and roadway.

The current state of the painting is seen in the photo directly below.

I'll have a new painting to show you next week. See you then.

Saturday Painting Palooza Vol.382

Hello again painting fans.

This week I will be continuing with the the painting of the vintage Hudson photograph. I'll be using my usual acrylic paints on an 8x10 gallery wrapped canvas. The photo appears directly below.

When last seen, that painting appeared as it does in the photo directly below.

Since that time I have continued to work on the painting.

There are many, many changes this week. I'll start at the top and move down. The sky has been totally revised and now has a central thick fluffy cloud. Below that, the interior of the Hudson has received some enhacements. The rear ceiling is now seen through the back windows. The far side of the windshield is a hazy plane of glass. Note the vent window post at the driver'side along with the side view mirror. To the rear, there is now some green along the roadway shoulder.

And then there is the figure. Don't laugh too much. She is not exactly how I pictured her to be. The boran2 boy asked why grandma is in the painting. I had hoped for someone a bit hotter but sometimes you get what you need instead of what you want. She has received a face/hair along with a finished arm and ankles. Her shoes and bobbysocks complete her attire. I've added some yellow to her dress and shading. The shading carries over to her hair, face and socks. And with these changes the painting is now complete.

The current and final state of the painting is seen in the photo directly below.

I'll have a new painting to show you next week. See you then.
