Saturday Painting Palooza Vol.376

Hello again painting fans.

This week I will be continuing with the painting of Bell Rock in Sedona, Arizona. The photo that I'm using is seen directly below.

I'm using my usual acrylic paints on a 9x12 inch gallery-wrapped (frameless) canvas..

When last seen, the painting appeared as it does in the photo directly below.

Since that time I have continued to work on the painting.

When we finished last time, I was rather unhappy with how things were turning out. I'm feeling better about this piece after making some progress this past week. I was not looking forward to going back to the foreground. In preparing to do so, I grabbed two brushes, one rather worn. That brush proved to be the key to successfully painting the evergreens seen in the original photo. The brush has essentially separated into multiple independent strands. I had originally intended to use it here just to spread some paint but it proved to be perfect for painting brush and shrubs with texture. The result is perhaps a bit too green but is nicely textured. As an aside, the butte is probably a bit too bright as well but the consistency has now been carried forward. Also, the bushes may appear a bit arranged but I was attempting to mirror what appears in the photo.

The current of the painting is seen in the photo directly below.

I'll have more progress to show you next week. See you then.

Saturday Painting Palooza Vol.375

Hello again painting fans.

This week I will be continuing with the painting of Bell Rock in Sedona, Arizona. The photo that I'm using is seen directly below.

I'm using my usual acrylic paints on a 9x12 inch gallery-wrapped (frameless) canvas..

When last seen, the painting appeared as it does in the photo directly below.

Since that time I have continued to work on the painting.

I finally started the green area at the foot of Bell Rock and on the other side of the trail. Yes, it looks a bit like the cemetery at Boot Hill right now. I had some difficulty getting things to look right. I had to reverse a bit and paint those blue areas. These will provide a base upon which I will attempt, once again, to build the junipers seen in the photo. There is much left to do and I'm not particularly happy with this piece right now. I'll hope (and try) for the best.

Saturday Painting Palooza Vol.374

Hello again painting fans.

This week I will be continuing with the painting of Bell Rock in Sedona, Arizona. The photo that I'm using is seen directly below.

I'm using my usual acrylic paints on a 9x12 inch gallery-wrapped (frameless) canvas..

When last seen, the painting appeared as it does in the photo directly below.

Since that time I have continued to work on the painting.

I began by overpainting the large elements delineated in the prior installment. That change is seen directly below.

I then began to paint details of the butte and sky. Starting at the top, I've altered the clouds seen in the photo. Mine are round and puffy. I like them better than the originals. Note the tiny distant cloud seen on the left side. I also added details to the butte. After trying to paint the highlights and shadows as seen in the photo, I recognized that it wasn't going to work in the painting. I've done a much simpler version of those details. I'm not completely satisfied yet and might yet change things a bit but not a great deal.

The current of the painting is seen in the photo directly below.

I'll have more progress to show you next week. See you then.

Saturday Painting Palooza Vol.373

Hello again painting fans.

This week I will be starting an entirely new painting. We're headed out west for a refreshing change. I'm painting from a photo I took on the trail around Bell Rock in Sedona, Arizona. The photo that I'm using is seen directly below.

I started this piece by blocking out the main elements. These I did in colors that are very different from the layers that are yet to come. I wanted to experiment a bit as I did in the last one. That sky will eventually be dominated by blue but the first brownish layer, seen below, will show through in at least a small way. Anyway, it would make for an interesting abstract painting if I was to stop here. I will continue to add layers and refine things in the weeks to come.

The current of the painting is seen in the photo directly below.

I'll have more progress to show you next week. See you then.
