Saturday Painting Palooza Vol.147

Welcome back.

This week we will be continuing with the new painting of the Cape May Victorian started in last week's installment. The photo that I'm using is seen directly below.

I am doing this piece in my usual acrylics in an 8x10 format.

When last seen, the painting appeared as it does in the photo seen directly below.

Since that time, I have continued to work on the painting.

Unfortunately, I did not get as much done as I would have liked. I'll attribute that to a certain 9 year old boy that has this habit of monopolizing my free time.

What I have done is paint in the blue of the sky, or at least the first layers of what will be the sky. The brown still shows through at this point. I'm still deciding exactly how I want the sky to appear when it's all done. I'll need to make that decision before going any further with it.

I've also started to paint in the shadowed areas of the house. This was done with paint left over from the sky. Those areas will be more of a blue-gray when complete.

The current state of the painting is seen in the photo directly below.

That's about it for now. I'll see you next week with more progress on this piece. As always, feel free to add photos of your own work in the comments section below.

3 Years Old

This blog is now 3 years old. To say that it is now nothing like I first envisioned it to be is an understatement of gross proportions.

I had hoped that SLB (Formerly the lamely named "Omniblog".) would join the ranks of the better known blogs. The term naive does not accurately portray my thinking at that time. Eventually, I realized that time did not allow for the development of an original "voice", or for appropriate research. The early environmental posts have given way to other things. It is more personal now, with few of the visitors that came for those older posts.

My priorities have been reshaped along with my expectations. I've thought about deleting the entire thing, but somehow I couldn't do it. I'll continue, at least for the time being. And of course, I'll post at BooMan and the great orange satan.

Thanks to those who continue to post kind words.

Saturday Painting Palooza Vol. 146

Welcome back.

This week we will be starting an entirely new project, but first some old business. Seen in the photo directly below is our last project in a plein air style frame. I was able to buy it for $14.99 at a craft store! Such a deal. Usually I have to go order from pleinairframes.com to get better frames but once in a while I get lucky. It actually has a silvery finish that may not come through in the photo. I think that it suits the painting well.

On to the new painting. I wasn't ready to leave the subject of Victorian houses and will be painting from the photo seen directly below. This time around I am using my own photo, taken in Cape May, New Jersey when I was there just a few days ago. Cape May is the promised land of Victorian structures, having more than 600 in a square mile. It is well worth a visit.

I will be doing this piece in my usual acrylics in an 8x10 format.

I started with a dark underpainting to cover lines that were on the canvas from an earlier Grand Canyon piece seen here a few cycles back. It was completed on another canvas while this one collected dust. It will finally prove useful here. On the brownish background I painted the outline in a pink color, only because that shade was handy and would show well against the brown. The current state of the painting is seen in the photo directly below.

That's about it for now. I'll see you next week with more progress on this piece. As always, feel free to add photos of your own work in the comments section below.

The One That Got Away

Seen in Cape May, New Jersey last weekend was this remarkable kite. Its size was obviously considerable but making an estimate would be difficult.

Saturday Painting Palooza Vol. 145

Welcome back.

This week we will be continuing with the painting of the Victorian house in Las Vegas, New Mexico, seen in the photo directly below. As usual, I'll be using acrylics. This one is large for me, the canvas is 11x14.

When last seen, the painting appeared as it does in the photo seen directly below.

Since that time I have continued to work on the painting.

I've finished the front porch along with the half-shadowed railing going down to the left side street level. Note that the left side porch railing is now in shadow. To right of the street level railing, the bushes now cast a shadow across the pavement.

The building to the right rear has had its roof repainted. The building to left rear now has a shadow across it cast by the main structure. This is one of my favorite parts of this painting. And with that I am finally done.

The current state of the painting is seen in the photo directly below.

That's about it for now. I'll see you next week with something new. As always, feel free to add photos of your own work in the comments section below.

Tribal Council

Up for ejection from the virtual island of Left Blogistan is Marietta, Georgia bar owner Mike Norman. That is, racist Marietta, Georgia bar owner Mike Norman.

Link

Marietta bar owner Mike Norman says the T-shirts he's peddling, featuring a look-a-like of cartoon chimp Curious George peeling a banana, with "Obama in '08" underneath, are not meant to offend.

Norman acknowledged the imagery's Jim Crow roots but said he sees nothing wrong with depicting a prominent African-American as a monkey,

No, nothing wrong at all.

Mr.Norman, you have been voted off the island. The tribe has spoken.

Saturday Painting Palooza Vol.144

Welcome back.

This week we will be continuing with the painting of the Victorian house in Las Vegas, New Mexico, seen in the photo directly below. As usual, I'll be using acrylics. This one is large for me, the canvas is 11x14.

When last seen, the painting appeared as it does in the photo seen directly below.

Since that time I have continued to work on the painting.

I have reshaped the foreground bushes a bit. They now grow gradually smaller toward the right/rear. Their edges are, well, a bit bushier, a bit more ragged. The third and rearmost bush has reduced in width with a shadow on its right side.

Appearing for the first time are the porch railing and siding, situated above a yellowish paved area. These will change a bit for the next installment.

Finally, the windows in the turret now have ochre-colored trim.

The current state of the painting is seen in the photo directly below.

That's about it for now. I'll see you next week. As always, feel free to add photos of your own work in the comments section below.

Saturday Painting Palooza Vol.143

Welcome back.

This week we will be continuing with the new painting that I started last week, the Victorian house in Las Vegas, New Mexico, seen in the photo directly below. As usual, I'll be using acrylics. This one is large for me, the canvas is 11x14.

When last seen, the painting appeared as it does in the photo seen directly below.

Since that time I have continued to work on the painting.

I have concentrated my efforts on the long-suffering foreground. Now appearing for the first time are 3 rather strange bushes and a lawn stretching from one side of the painting to the other. The bushes will change in the next installment. I'd prefer to see the largest one toward the left, each one to the right gradually reducing in size to the rear. The shadowing will remain to the left side consistent with the other elements of the painting. The lawn will change to have more variation. It's shape will likely remain the same.

The current state of the painting is seen in the photo directly below.

That's about it for now. I'll see you next week. As always, feel free to add photos of your own work in the comments section below.
