Saturday Painting Palooza Vol. 402

Hello again painting fans.

This week I will be continuing with the painting of the gothic Cape May house. The photo that I will be using is seen directly below. I will be using my usual acrylics on an 8x10 canvas.

When last seen, the painting appeared as it does directly below.

The last week has been a great challenge, with both good and very bad. I did not find much time to paint as my mother passed away. Dealing with this has been difficult for both expected and unexpected reasons. I've never experienced the grief of losing a parent. Suffice it to say that my emotions have run the gamut. Added to this are the rifts now opening in my family. Things will take time to sort out.

However, I did find a few minutes to throw some paint on the canvas. I've added some blue paint to the outline of the van. I've also added green to the tree and lawn. Not terribly impressive progress but I'm surprised that this much was done. I'll have more next week.

And now to the good. The last painting, the Packard grille, was accepted for the current juried show at the Kent Art Association. Frankly, I was surprised. The tastes of the judging artists tend toward the traditional. In any event, if you are in the Kent, Connecticut area, please stop by.

The current state of the painting is seen directly below.

I'll have more progress to show you next week. See you then.

Saturday Painting Palooza Vol. 401

Hello again painting fans.

This week I will be starting an entirely new painting. The photo that I will be using is seen directly below. It is a house in Cape May, New jersey, like a few that I've done before. This one will be a little different. I'm entitling it "New American Gothic", starting where Grant Wood left off. (I will be using my usual acrylics on an 8x10 canvas.)

As to Grant Wood, this piece also includes a Gothic window like his well known painting. It is seen in the gable to the right, at the top of the building. Today's American Gothic will include the American flag and minivan in front. Hopefully, viewers will understand.

I started with an outline in blue. Blue will be dominant here, with highlights in white. Or at least that's what seems appropriate now but may change. Anyway, the present state is seen directly below.

I'll have more progress to show you next week. See you then.

Saturday Painting Palooza Vol. 400

Hello again painting fans.

This week I will be continuing with the painting of the 1949 Packard. I'm using my usual acrylic paints on a large 20x20 inch gallery-wrapped canvas. The photo that I am using is seen directly below.

When last seen, the painting appeared as it does in the photo directly below.

Since that time, I have continued to work on the painting.

The changes for this week are many. I've finally addressed the righthand headlight. It is complete and done in grays and white. The surrounding chrome ring is handled in a fashion similar to the other chrome elements, white with blue shading. I've modified the lefthand light slightly to match its brother. Below, the upper surface of the bumper has had details added to the far side. On the bottom right side, I have added the bolt head seen as an oval. I've also added more blue to the shading of the car body. Seen in person, it appears more intense. Finally, I've gone over the gray of the pavement. And with these changes, the painting is done.

The current and final state of the painting is seen in the photo directly below.

I'll have a new painting to show you next week. See you then.

Saturday Painting Palooza Vol.399

Hello again painting fans.

This week I will be continuing with the painting of the 1949 Packard. I'm using my usual acrylic paints on a large 20x20 inch gallery-wrapped canvas. The photo that I am using is seen directly below.

When last seen, the painting appeared as it does in the photo directly below.

Since that time, I have continued to work on the painting.

There are many changes this week. First, I've completed the headlight to the rear. You can get a sense of how things will look when the remaining light is done. To the bottom, I've added a shadow below the car. Previously, the Packard looked like it was floating in space. Now it is well grounded, so to speak. I've lightened the color of the bumper face to bring it in line with the other chrome elements. Finally, the highlights of the car now appear in blue instead of the prior white. I think that it brings a unity and/or consistency to the various elements.

The current state of the painting is seen in the photo directly below.

I'll have more progress to show you next week. See you then.
